Affirm and Assert Yourself

The concept that I found really interested from this week is on page 212, about affirm and assert yourself. It talks about how important to affirm yourself.  I also learned that I am no less valuable, my preference is no less valid than others. We should respect and honor both ourselves and other’s needs. The principle of confirming people’s worth applies just as much to oneself as to others. Sometimes, we will not be able to meet all the needs in relationships, but it is also important to express our feelings to them. If we do not give any voices, there are no ways others can confirm us. The text also defined assertion, which is a matter of clearly and nonjudgmentally stating what you feel, need, or want. We can be asserted without disparaging others. We should also learn how people affirm themselves, and different ways to express their feelings directly or indirectly in order to communicate more effectively.

  1. Hi Denise,
Great choice of concept from this week’s reading! I agree with you that affirming and asserting yourself are very important because we need to respect and value ourselves. I thought this concept struck a good balance in taking care of ourselves and others. It is of course important to treat others with respect and recognize their needs, but we should also not ignore ours. All our relationships should be as balanced as possible because there can be times where we might pour all our energy into one person and not take care of ourselves. Communicating what we feel in a relationship is important because we are acknowledging our feelings to both the other person and to ourselves.

  2. Great post and topic! I def agree with you about how important ut is to affirm yourself and stand up for yourself! It is very important to get your point across and respect what others have to say. Being able to
express yourself to other people and respect what they have to say is very important to grow and learn how to better communicate to different people. It is also very important to be confirmed and confirm others especially in relationships. I liked the last statement about people affirming themselves because that is important as well.
